The Active Back Programme - diary by Maria Kuehn

On Monday 4th August I hope my life will be about to change. For years I have been suffering from lower back pain, sometimes so acute my only option is bed. Disc degeneration has cost me a fortune in treatment and has stolen precious days of my life.
No one really understands the pain and misery caused  by a rotten back unless they have been through it themselves. It's like depression - you can't see it.
Having undergone what I can only describe as a brutal procedure called a discogram where they stick needles into the damaged discs to ascertain pain levels, (my response to the pain is not printable) I was told that an operation would not be possible as having more than one damaged disc ruled fusion out.
At this point I was ready to curl up into a ball and howl inconsolably, only to be given hope in the form of the above programme - a three week back rehab programme which has had extremely good results, according to the literature.
So this Monday I begin a journey towards better back health which should nullify the need for treatment and focus attention on building core strength through water exercises and Pilates, as well as attending lectures on pain management, posture and a host of other related subjects.
I have never longed more for a day to come. I shall be writing about my experiences and hope to pass some hope onto fellow sufferers. Stand by.
